I couldn't believe how many e-mails I got asking me about this, so here's the answer. Below is the listing of the top fitness trends for 2009. A survey was taken by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) to show what fitness programs that are very affordable will be the biggest trends in 2009.
I'm not a big one on trendy diets and fads, but most of these are tried and true mainstays that deliver plus let you have a lot of fun...or as much fun as you can have while getting yourself into the shape you want with lasting results!
Just like last year, boot camp-style workouts are slated to be the top fitness trend for 2009. Boot camps that aim to strengthen large muscle groups with pushups, squats, and lunges, can easily burn up to 600 calories during one session. That will definitely rack up the numbers on your pedometer too!
These aren't always as hardcore and intense as they sound. I did one in New York, and boy, was it a lot of fun. They set you up in groups to gain strength and endurance without feeling intimidated.
The biggest trend they found? Getting more workout and effectiveness for the money, says ACE Chief Science Officer Cedric X. Bryant, PhD, in a news release. The overarching theme for fitness in 2009 is getting more bang for the buck.
Now that's not such a surprise with this economy that doesn't seem like it'll be gettin any better until at least 2010.
Bryant says, Consumers will engage in workouts that provide multiple benefits due to time and economic limitations. We will also see continued trends from 2008 including boot-camp style workouts, technology-based workouts, out-of-the-box programming, and an increased interest in fitness for those who are over 50 years old.
Here's what their survey predicted to be the Top 10 fitness trends for this year:
1. Boot camp-style fitness programs. Again, these can be great fun. Especially if you bring along a friend to endure with you.
2. Workout plans that are less expensive. I think that goes without saying.
The nice thing is that if you are feeling a little intimidated working out in front of other people, start with a simple pedometer. You can get them for between $1 - $10 even at Walmart. It's a great way to start getting more active in the privacy of your own home. Plus you'll guage how active you are by tracking how many steps you take each day. Every 2,000 steps averages about 1 mile and you can work your way up to the optimal 10,000 steps per day.
3. Specialty classes like Zumba, Bollywood, Afro-Cuban, and ballroom dancing. These classes are set to rhythmic music and aim to increase cardiovascular fitness while folks have fun. I've not tried one of these, but it definitely sounds interesting.
4. The basics. Fitness professionals believe that people will want to return to basic fitness programs.
5. Circuit training. Circuit training blends strength training and cardiovascular activity at different intensities. Another plus: gyms can set up their own circuit for members to follow.
6. Kettlebell training. These iron weights, traditionally used in Russia, aim to develop whole body fitness and core strength. These are very intense workouts, but they give a very thorough workout and you'll feel the workout!
7. Boomer fitness. A focus on fitness led by people 50 and older. That'll be my area in the next ten years.
8. Technology-based fitness. Using high-tech gadgets like iPods to help keep workouts engaging, plus an increase in interactive fitness video games. These are so killer. I've tried this way back when and it holds your total interest and you forget you're working out. The Wii is another great example of this.
9. Event or sports-specific exercises. A focus on the simple things, like basketball or volleyball games, or day bike rides. My partner has a bike and it's still up in the attic, so I know how these can go...
10. Mixing it up. Low-intensity cardio or weight training on one day, followed by a high-intensity workout on another day. I'll show you how this can be done in the next week or so. This was something I learned from Jon Benson in his 7-Minute Muscle program and the results have been absolutely amazing.
So there's the list to all you people who e-mailed asking me. I wouldn't have learned it otherwise so keep those questions and thoughts coming. Until the next time...
